What is design? The original design is to create a lot of beautiful things, but now in this society, the purpose of design is more meaningful and deeper. The original so-called handicraft designers can no longer meet the current needs, they need to make progress, not just rely on intuition but master higher technology. What is the future of design? It may be process design, service design, or human-centered design. Whatever it is, it needs designers to have a deep understanding of people.
‘people oriented, design for people’ is perhaps the most important of these design changes. With the introduction of the term ‘design thinking’, designers have a new name: ‘design thinkers’. Their job is to come up with meaningful ideas and ideas to solve the real problems of a particular group of people, and then it’s not just about developing something beautiful, it’s more valuable than the thing itself. Using the power of technology to create beauty and pleasure, while approaching problems with new eyes, are both essential.
Design is both a craft and a way of thinking. There is no need to choose only one, just as the world needs two kinds of people: thoughtful thinkers and pragmatic doers. Even so, these two roles are interchangeable and transmutable. Actions can promote thoughts, and thoughts can further actions. For designers, drawing can be used to think, to add ideas, and to develop ideas based on some well-constructed visualizations. Of course, it’s not limited to that. This applies to any industry or discipline.
We should start in both directions. It’s like when we come across a fork on the road, please grab it.
A typical representative work that form follows function. Industrial design is not a purely artistic technique. Industrial design should achieve a good shape on the basis of satisfying function.
